HOUSTON -- A battle over Texas biology textbooks is brewing once again. A watchdog group said publishers are being pressured to teach creationism.
The State Board of Education relies on citizen review committees to endorse the textbooks.
It's harder for publishers to sell them to districts without it, but the Texas Freedom Network said at least eight of the 12 reviewers have come out publicly to say they want creationism in textbooks, in addition to the theory of evolution.
Science education should be based on main stream science education, not on the personal ideological beliefs of unqualified reviewers, said Kathy Miller, member of the Texas Freedom Network.
Some said the reviewers are only being targeted because of their religious beliefs.
The Board of Education plans to hold a public hearing on the issue next week.
