MADISONVILLE, Texas -- Madisonville police are calling the case horrendous. They said 10 men and one woman are accused of gang-raping a 16-year-old girl.
However, some members of the community said there is more to the story, and they are raising questions about what the teen told police.
Lakesha Scott said she knows several of the suspects and claims they are not rapists.
They ve already been in some type of trouble, she said. But that don t make them guilty of what she s accusing them of.
Police said the attack happened in a trailer home along East Lance Street in March. They say a 16-year-old girl was given crystal meth and brought there to be brutally gang-raped.
On Friday, several suspects were rounded up in an early morning sting. Four remain at large.
Denise Lotts sister is the female suspect.
It s really sad, she said. All they need to do is just show the evidence. Just prove it that s it.
Investigators said it took months to build their case. Much of what they know comes from the victim, who was intoxicated at the time of the incident.
They re not just going to arrest somebody if they don t have evidence, right? asked Cassie Maldonado, who identified herself as a friend of the victim.
At the same time, others are upset at how the suspects were arrested. Some were seen barefoot and in little more than boxers.
Don t convict them yet, resident Harry Merchant pleaded. Give them a chance, give her a chance.
It was not the first case in Madisonville this year where a minor was allegedly abused while under the influence of drugs.
Last month a woman was arrested for allegedly giving underage girls crystal meth and then prostituting them.
