HOUSTON A Fort Bend County family lost their home in a fire started by a lightning strike, but firefighters were able to save their pet beagle.

The fire started at about 10:35 a.m. Friday in the 16700 block of Aliana Lake Court in Richmond, Texas. Surveillance video from a nearby business captured the lightning bolt that hit the home.

The family members were at work when the fire started and learned about the blaze when their neighbors called.

She said, 'You have to come home right away, it s an emergency,' said the homeowner Julio DeGuzman.

DeGuzman came home to find his find his house in shambles. He said they just built the house from the ground up seven months ago.

I can t really describe it, it s just heartbreaking, DeGuzman said.

Firefighters found his family s beagle Matty hiding under a mattress and said he d been there for 30 minutes.

They couldn t find her at first, so I was thinking the worse, (but) I was still hoping, DeGuzman said. I was praying my dog was OK.

Matty was taken to a veterinarian and was expected to be OK.

Friends and neighbors pitched in to help the family sort through the rubble before the next round of storms moved into the area.

My main priority is salvage what we can a lot of pictures, movies everything else is replaceable, he said.
