SAN ANTONIO-- The first open house to discuss passenger rail service along the Interstate 35 corridor took place Monday night. It's the first meeting of 12.

The population of Texas is growing and I-35 is already congested. One potential answer is adding a passenger rail.

We need to look at other forms of transportation that will help relieve that congestion, said Laura Lopez, spokesperson for TXDOT.

Most of the residents in attendance want to know if TxDOT is more interested in conventional speed, higher speed or high speed rail.

I would like to see high speed rail, said Eric Ward who travels often from San Antonio to the Dallas-Forth Worth. He's taken the standard rail before, but says it's just not fast enough.

It's about the same heading up there, a little slower really because of all the stops. You can't have a robust transportation network without looking at the various options of transit, Ward said.

The two-year study wraps up in December 2014.
