SAN ANTONIO -- A deaf woman managed to wake up and escape from her home just moments before flames consumed her bedroom early Thursday morning.

The fire started around 2 a.m. in the 400 block of Stonewall Street.

The 58-year-old woman living at the home communicated to her sister that she woke up when she heard or felt a loud pop. She managed to get out of the house just before the fire consumed her room.

The woman said her sister is completely deaf and that it's a miracle she was able to hear the noise and get out safely.

San Antonio fire officials said the blaze started in the front of the house but quickly spread to attic and walls. By the time crews arrived, the house was completely engulfed in flames.

Firefighters had to tear down the ceiling to fight the blaze. It was out within 40 minutes but crews had to stay on scene to check for hot spots inside the walls.

The woman did not have renters insurance but will be staying with a relative for the time being.

Fire officials said the fire does not appear to be suspicious.

Damage was estimated around $30,000.
