DENTON COUNTY -- A sheriff's deputy opened fire on a motorist during a traffic stop in rural Denton County on Monday afternoon.

Department spokesman Tom Reedy said the gunfire ensued after the suspect's white sedan started moving in reverse toward the deputy after he started walking toward the driver.

The suspect was shot twice and critically injured. He was taken to a hospital by ambulance as paramedics performed CPR. No name was available.

The deputy was not injured. A second person who was in the suspect's vehicle was detained for questioning. Reedy said the deputy observed the man who was shot changing places with the passenger before their car was pulled over.

The incident happened around 4:30 p.m. on FM 1173 near Plainview Road, about 12 miles northwest of Denton.

The first pictures from HD Chopper 8 showed the white sedan with bullet holes in a driveway with a Denton County Sheriff's vehicle immediately behind it.

Troopers from the Texas Department of Public Safety joined sheriff's deputies investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
