AUSTIN-- Gov. Rick Perry says God forgives peoples' Oops moments.

Addressing a prayer breakfast Wednesday, the former Republican presidential candidate noted self-effacingly of his highly ridiculed campaign gaffe, America may not forgive you, but God will.

Perry infamously muttered oops during a presidential debate when he couldn't name all three federal departments he would eliminate if elected. It has become one of the campaign's signature moments.

The governor is a devout evangelical Christian. His speech marked the National Day of Prayer, an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May which invites people of all faiths to pray for the country.

Perry spoke a day early, but he also presented a proclamation recognizing the following day, May 3, as Texas Day of Prayer.
