WALKER COUNTY, Texas Firefighters are still battling the Midway fire in Madison and Walker counties.
The fire was just 15 percent contained as of Monday evening, said Tpr. Erik Burse with the Texas Department of Public Safety.
Officials said the fire, which spread to over 1,640 acres, forced at least 40 homes along FM 2989 to be evacuated on Monday. The area is just east of I-45, north of Huntsville and south of Madisonville. Parts of FM 247 and Highway 75 were also shut down, but all were reopened Monday.
Drivers traveling through I-45 The main interstate between Houston and Dallas - should use extreme caution, as heavy smoke is still blanketing the area and trees can be seen burning on both sides of the road.
The Forest Service said two Blackhawk helicopters were coming to assist firefighters.
No injuries have been reported.
