HOUSTON -- The 6-year-oldRoss Elementarystudentwho accidentally shot himself and two classmates Tuesday got the gun from a family friend, according to Houston's police chief.
Chief Charles McClelland said earlier reports that the 9-mm handgun fell from the boy's pocket were incorrect. He said the boy took the loaded weapon out of a bag to show it to a friend and that's when it discharged.
A single bullet grazed the kindergartner who brought the gun, along with 6-year-old Khoran Brown and 5-year-old Za'Keyah Thomas.
All three students were treated at Texas Children's Hospital and are now recovering at home.
Texas law is clear: having a gun within a child's reach is a crime.
You keep loaded guns around where children can get them, it's not just a tragedy waiting to happen, it's criminal responsibility on your behalf, as well, said KHOU 11 News Legal Expert Gerald Treece.
The chief didn't say whether the owner of the gun had been charged.
