HOUSTON -- Houston-area residents have turned over more than 3,000 pounds of expired, unused and unwanted prescription medications to federal authorities.

The Saturday collection was the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration s first effort to round up unused prescription drugs. The agency collected medications at 3,400 locations nationwide as part of its National Prescription Drug Take-Back Campaign.

In the Houston area, prescriptions were accepted at 17 sites.

The Houston Chronicle reports the Houston DEA is now storing the medications in its drug vault right behind bales of confiscated marijuana.

Assistant Special Agent Anthony Scott says the agency has a contract with an incinerator to burn the unwanted medications.
