HOUSTON A man was run over then shot and killed at his birthday party at an east side nightclub early Friday.

A family friend identified the victim as Angel Reyes. She said the victim s sister is an HPD officer. A woman was driven to the crime scene in an HPD patrol car. Upon arrival she and a relative consoled each other.

Police said Reyes had been arguing with another man. When the dispute continued in the parking lot, the man ran over Reyes and a second victim.

He flipped in the air a couple of times and landed on his back, said HPD Homicide Det. Richard Rodriguez. The detective said Reyes continued to exchange words with his attacker after he was hit and the man shot Reyes in the chest about six times, killing him.

The other man who was struck by the car went to the hospital with broken bones.

The crime happened at Club Sophia on Sheffield Street near Market in East Houston about 6 a.m.

People in the neighborhood complained that the club often stays open, serving liquor until past dawn.

One woman said the club poses a danger to nearby school children. A church directly across the street operates a preschool and there is a middle school down the street.

Agents with the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission arrived at the scene to possibly shut the club down, Rodriguez said.

The only description police could give of the suspect is that he is a Hispanic man, driving a Honda or similar model car. The car most likely has visible damage.

Anyone with information is urged to call the Houston Police Department.
