HOUSTON -- Imagine a bullet train speeding between Houston and North Texas at 200 mph. The mayors of Houston, Dallas and Fort Worth hope it will soon become reality.

We're excited about it for several reasons, first of all, because it's just cool, said Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings. The fact that it is privately funded from Dallas to Houston is extremely important for taxpayers.

The Texas Central Railway plans to use a combination of existing right of way and acquired property to build a high speed rail system, bringing travelers from downtown

Houston to the centers of Dallas and Fort Worth in 90 minutes.

I think that would be outstanding, said Carol Cox, who travels between Dallas and Houston at least once a week. I wouldn't have to go an hour to the airport, through security, it would be faster.

Texas Central says its trains will be equipped with WI-FI, allowing travelers to work or surf the internet.

The company's first step is to file an environmental impact statement with the Federal Railroad Commission.

Officials hope to have trains running as early as 2021.
