HOUSTON - Two people were killed and another person was injured in a high-speed crash that shut down FM 1960 early Friday morning, deputies said.

The crash happened at Wortham Boulevard east of Highway 290 around 2:20 a.m.

Authorities with the Harris County Sheriff s Office said a man, 29, was with his friends at an IHOP when he realized he left his coat at a nearby bar. He got into his red Volkswagen and, as he was turning into a parking lot, an oncoming Chevrolet Camaro sideswiped him.

He was attempting to turn left into a parking lot that was on the northside of the roadway, said Sgt. S. Wolverton. As he turned, he turned into the path of a Camaro that was on 1960. That Camaro struck the Volkswagen, causing a violent rotation. The driver was ejected from the vehicle and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies said the Camaro went on to hit a utility pole. The 24-year-old woman behind the wheel was critically injured and was sent to the hospital by Life Flight. Her male passenger died at the scene.

Both speed and alcohol may have played a role in the collision, deputies said.

We believe that alcohol very well may be a factor on both drivers, said Wolverton. We know that both parties involved were at clubs tonight.

The Camaro was going nearly 100 mph when the crash occurred, deputies believe. The impact was so violent it tore the sports car into pieces, leaving its engine in the middle of the roadway.

FM 1960 remained closed for nearly seven hours as officials investigated the crash. The road reopened shortly before 9 a.m.
