KATY A cheer coach in Katy has been charged with sexually assaulting one of his students.

Devincent Phillips, 40, was arrested by Fort Bend County Sheriff s Office Special Crimes detectives Thursday.

Phillips is a cheer coach at Xcel Athletics in the 500 block of South Mason Road.

A girl came forward in late October and said Phillips sexually assaulted her three times at Xcel.

The Fort Bend County Sheriff s Office was called and they launched an investigation.

Many parents rushed to Xcel Friday evening to defend the coach.

I trust this man, said Jana Lynch, a concerned parent. 'He makes them work hard, but he's not that person.

Students said the allegations were false. Molly Fitzpatrick was trained by Phillips for years.

Whoever is doing this is lying, Fitzpatrick said. He would never do that. I've been here forever and he's never laid a hand on any of us.

Phillips is charged with sexual assault of a child and he is being held on a $20,000 bond.

Investigators believe there could be more victims.

If so, they are asked to contact the Fort Bend County Sheriff s Office at 281-341-3863 or Fort Bend County Crime Stoppers at 281-342-TIPS (8477.)
