HOUSTON - An 8-year-old boy and a woman were killed when their car slammed into a concrete pillar along the Gulf Freeway late Tuesday morning, police said.

A third person, a man, was critically injured and sent to the hospital.

Houston TranStar reported the crash happened at 10:26 a.m. in the freeway s northbound lanes near El Dorado Boulevard.

Houston police said the young boy was in a booster seat but was still thrown from the vehicle upon impact.

According to my witnesses, she was driving and all of a sudden just lost control of the car for no apparent reason, Officer David Knapp said.

Police said the car was not speeding, but they were investigating unconfirmed claims that texting-while-driving may have played a role in the crash.

Police said the victims lived just a couple of miles from the crash site.

As of noontime Tuesday, the freeway had one northbound mainlane closed as well as the frontage road. A slight backup was reported on the mainlanes due to rubbernecking.
