HOUSTON -- At Bush Intercontinental Airport, homecomings happen every day, but they do not always involve a long and painful journey.
On Friday, hundreds of veterans arrived for Wounded Warrior Weekend. They will go fishing at Port O Connor, while meeting some of their strongest supporters.
At baggage claim, there were singers and a Boy Scout troop. Children skipped school and parents skipped work just to be there.
The welcome was enough to move U.S. Army Cpt. Deborah Gibson to tears.
It s incredible, it really is, it s incredible, she said.
It also left others nearly speechless.
It s phenomenal, soldier Tom Perez said. It s just very rewarding.
But the ones most rewarded, perhaps, were the hundreds of people who welcomed them to Houston and took a moment to reflect.
Valerie Shultz dressed in red, white and blue for the occasion.
We re just so unaware of what all they do and all the freedoms we have because of them, she said.
She considered herself lucky to be there on a weekend those freedoms will be celebrated.
