AUSTIN, Texas (AP) -- The University Interscholastic League state track meet has begun after severe weather delayed its start at the University of Texas.

The state meet was supposed to begin at 8 a.m. Friday but was pushed back by a few hours because of lightning and rain in the region. It will be held through the day Friday and most of Saturday.

UIL spokesman Chris Schmidt says the meet can be held in the rain but officials must postpone events when there s lightning in the area.
