HOUSTON -- Houston and Bellaire fire departments battled a large grass fire near the Bellaire - southwest Houston border Tuesday evening.

Fire officials responded to S. Rice Avenue near Glenmont Drive around 7:35 p.m. Tuesday.

There were homes and condos around the open field.

Many residents watched helplessly as this fire burned and crews tried to contain the flames.

Fire officials are not sure what started the fire, but say it grew from covering a quarter acre to three acres in just a matter of minutes.

Authorities said it took about 20 minutes to put out the fire that burned grass and an electrical shed. The flames did not reach the homes and stayed about 100 yards from the properties.

The fire was tapped out around 8:00 p.m.

Officials said CenterPoint was called to inspect the area, but no residents lost power.

No injuries were reported.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
