HOUSTON A note left on aCypresswoman s car warned about safety but appeared to have a threatening undertone.
Carice Jackson says someone left the handwritten note under her windshield wiper. She had just returned to her car from a morning walk around a lake in Cypress when she saw it.
It reads in capital letters: WATCH OUT THIS IS NOT A VERY SAFE AREA FOR BLACK PEOPLE TO WALK BY THEMSELVES.
Jackson said her mind was racing after reading the message. She said she kept looking around to see if someone was watching her.
I was disgusted, explained Jackson. I don t think the pigment of your skin should dictate what anybody thinks about where you go and what you do.
A deputy with the Harris County Sheriff s Office met Jackson at her nearby apartment to take down a report. Jackson said she was shocked when she was no told that no further action could be taken.
At the end of the day, this is how things get started. It s the little things people do to threaten you and scare you away, said Jackson.
A spokesman with Harris County Sherriff s Office says there was no concrete evidence available to build a case. He said that investigators don t classify the note as a threat or a hate crime.
He also said that this note could be considered criminal, and he assured the public that an investigation will be launched if Jackson receives any more similar notes.
This is the world we live in. It s an evil world. It s very possible that this may happen again, Jackson said.
Deputies believe the note might have just been a twisted prank.
Many neighbors who live inThe Villages of Cypress Lakes weren t taking it lightly.
I can t believe it. I m embarrassed, said neighbor Hope Richett. It s a shame, but you have them everywhere though, people that are racist.
Richett and her husband Gerald described a diverse residential area of people who jog, walk and bike daily.
We re going to watch. I think people should speak up. Why not speak up for your fellow people, said Gerald Richett.
With neighbors standing behind her, Jackson plans to return to the lake for her morning jogs. She said she refuses to let someone else s ignorance change her routine.
I prayed for the person who did this, because you must have had a dark heart to even go through the lengths of writing this, she said.
