HOUSTON A man is in custody after failing to stop when officers tried to pull him over for a traffic violation and leading police on a car chase Sunday morning.
Joseph Alden, 37, is charged with evading arrest and driving while intoxicated.
Police say Alden ran a stop sign at the intersection of Gillette and Cleveland so they attempted to make a traffic stop. Alden allegedly ignored the patrol vehicle and fled from officers.
During the pursuit, Alden committed numerous traffic violations including driving across fields, on sidewalks and almost striking a METRO bus, a METRO train and a fire truck, according to investigators.
Alden then drove to the 1000 block of McGowen, where he struck a utility pole.
Officers told Alden to exit his car, which he did. He knelt down and allegedly began to look for something in his car. Police again told Alden to show his hands.
Authorities say Alden made a sudden movement toward officers as if he had something in his hands and an officer fired his gun, striking the vehicle but not Alden.
Alden was then taken into custody without further incident.
As is customary in officer-involved shooting, the case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide and Internal Affairs Divisions and the Harris County District Attorney s Office.
