ANAHUAC, Texas The man accused in the 1996 killing of 13-year-old Texas City resident Krystal Jean Baker wants to recant a confession in the killing. The confession was a key to a plea agreement he reached late last year with Chambers County officials.

Kevin Edison Smith, charged in September after DNA linked him to the 16-year-old cold case, is accused of kidnapping Baker as she walked from her grandmother s house in March 1996 and raping her before killing her and dumping her body underneath the Trinity River Bridge along Interstate 10 in Chambers County.

During a Wednesday court appearance, Smith became extremely agitated when he noticed news cameras in the hallways. Once inside, he started blurting out loud exclamations to the judge, confirmed defense attorney Stephen Christopher Taylor.
