HOUSTON A Kinkaid School graduate accused of murder in the stabbing death of his mother was found not guilty by reason of insanity Wednesday.

John Shank, a former lacrosse player at the University of Texas, will now go to a mental hospital for evaluation and will likely be institutionalized.

Police said Shank slashed his mother s throat during a fight at their home last December.

According to probable cause documents, neighbors heard screaming, so they entered the Shanks home, located in the 3700 block of Overbrook, through the back door.

They said John Shank walked by them, covered in blood, before they found Nancy Shank s body.

Investigators said Shank fled the scene in a white Jeep, but he was arrested a short time later at the Katy Freeway and the West Belt after his father convinced him to turn himself in.

Shank had a long history of mental illness.

Experts for both the defense and prosecution found Shank was legally insane at the time of the slaying.
