HOUSTON -- Ever wonder what would be the best hospital in your area to go to if you or a loved was showing signs of a stroke or heart attack?

A new study by HealthGrades, a prominent healthcare ratings organization, breaks it down for Texas patients city by city and hospital by hospital.

In all, hospitals are ranked in 26 categories, ranging from heart care to knee replacements, to back and neck surgery, even to success in transplants. The hospitals were ranked based on whether the patient survived and if there were any complications. The best hospitals received five stars. Hospitals with poor rankings received one star.

11 News poured through the Houston data of the new study.

When it came to strokes, patients received five-star care at Diagnostic Center Hospital and The Methodist Hospital.

For heart attacks, Doctors Hospital Tidwell and CHRISTUS St. John Hospital received five stars for a patient s survival while in the hospital. Meanwhile, Diagnostic Center Hospital and The Methodist Hospital received three stars on what s expected of a patient s survival for their initial stay. But, their ratings went up to five stars for checkups 1 month and 6 months after the hospitalization.

Receiving just one star, or a poor ranking for stroke and heart attack care was Ben Taub Hospital. Medical experts did point out that Ben Taub had excellent trauma care, which is something that was not ranked in this study.

When it came to five-star maternity care, Houston Northwest Medical Center, along with Memorial Hermann NW, SW, SE & Memorial City topped the list.

The Woman s Medical Hospital of Texas received three stars for its maternity care, along with St. Luke s Episcopal Hospital and The Methodist Hospital.

Memorial Hermann Southwest and two other campuses also ranked in the top 50 hospitals in the nation.

We treat every patient as if it was an airline flight and we want to it be perfect, so we go for perfect care, said Dr. Myron Michael Shabot, Memorial Hermann s Assistant Chief Medical Officer.

The Modi family decided to have their baby girl at Memorial Hermann Southwest and said they re glad they did.

The hospital has always been very excellent, said Jagruti Modi, a maternity patient at the hospital.
