HOUSTON Doctors are increasingly confident former President George H.W. Bush will be released from the hospital in time to celebrate Christmas at home, a spokesman said Tuesday.

George Kovacik with Methodist Hospital said the president has been in physical therapy as he recovers from a persistent cough.

President Bush s physical therapy continues to progress, and his doctors are increasingly confident he will be released in time to celebrate Christmas at home with his family, wrote Kovacik in a statement to the media. He remains in stable condition.

Bush, 88, has been in the hospital since Nov. 23.
