Five years ago today, the world seemed to stop for a moment.
Legendary entertainer and King of Pop Michael Jackson died, on Thursday, June 25, 2009 at the age of 50. He left behind an unparalleled career and a monumental impact on the global entertainment industry.
His death was ruled a homicide, and Dr. Conrad Murray was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter by administering a lethal amount of propofol and benzodiazepine to Jackson, who later suffered a fatal cardiac arrest. Murray served 2 years in prison and was released on October 2013 for good behavior.
Throughout his nearly four-decade career, Jackson had a global impact on music, philanthropy, dance, songwriting and pop culture. He was, and remains today, an iconic figure, and his highly publicized, oft-controversial personal life made Jackson one of pop culture's most polarizing figures.
Jackson was inducted on the Hollywood Hall of Fame twice; as a member of The Jacksons in 1980 and as a solo artist in 1984. Having started in show-business as a member of the Jackson 5 along with his four other brothers, Jackson eventually became a solo artist. He would go on to make the best-selling album of all time, Thriller, and would win 13 Grammy Awards, 26 American Music Awards, have 13 singles number 1 singles in the U.S. and sell an estimated 400 million albums.
