HOUSTON -- From fiery crash to a wheelchair battered and bruised, Joe Williams has survived what others could not.

It s heart wrenching on everybody, said the Precinct 4 Deputy Constable who along with his wife Laurie, were part of a deadly chain reaction accident at a Beltway 8 toll plaza last week.

Williams, who was driving the car, had just stopped to pay the toll when it happened.

It was a loud crash and boom with glass flying, Williams said. I got up and moved around trying to get her out of the car.

Williams and his wife were taken to Memorial Herman Hospital. Laurie is in a medically induced coma and remains in critical condition.

Investigators believed the crash was caused by the trash truck, which had been bobbing and weaving through traffic. Motorists had called 911 to complain.

There may have been a health problem with the gentleman, said Precinct 4 Constable Lt. Wayne Shultz. There may have been something on board. We don t know.

The trash truck entered the toll plaza area traveling at close to 65 miles per hour.

Both the driver of the trash truck and the driver of a pickup were killed.

Williams is currently unable to work. Supporters have set up a fund to help cover the family's expenses. It s a gesture of kindness to a husband left with a question no one can answer for sure.

When is she going to open up her eyes and talk to me, asked Williams.
