STAFFORD, Texas A Stafford police officer is in stable condition after she was shot during a traffic stop early Saturday.

According to the Stafford Police Department, the incident happened after Officer Ann Carrizales pulled over a silver Nissan Altima for traffic violations in the 12700 block of Murphy Road just before 4 a.m. One of the three men in the car shot her in the chest and leg.

The wounded Carrizales returned fire before getting back into her cruiser to chase after the suspect car, police said.

Once the vehicle came to a stop, she was speaking with the driver in the vehicle when a passenger in the vehicle fired upon her twice. The officer was able to return fire, the vehicle then fled the scene, SPD Police Lt. Dustin Claborn said.

During the pursuit, police said Carrizales was telling the dispatcher her every move.

She was calm. She relayed that shots were fired. She continued to call her pursuit into Houston, Claborn said.

The pursuit ended in the area of Woodfair and Club Creek in Houston, police said.

Law enforcement units from Missouri City, Sugar Land, Houston and the Department of Public Safety assisted Stafford PD with establishing a perimeter and helping detain the suspected shooter, 21-year-old Sergio Francisco Rodriguez.

The other two other occupants took off on foot including Freddy Henriquez, 28, who has been identified as the driver of the suspect vehicle.

Police said Carrizales was then taken to the Memorial Hermann Hospital. Her ballistic vest without a doubt saved her life.

KHOU 11 News has video of her walking around outside of the emergency room as she is still recovering. She has a bandage wrapped around her face.

Carrizales, a mother of two, has been with the SPD since August 2010. Her training taught her well.

She is a former Marine and was a military police officer in the Marine Corps, Claborn said.

Carrizales is an inspiration to many.

Without any doubt, her ballistic vest saved her life last night; she was very fortunate. It s an excellent example of why a vest should be worn at all times Claborn said.

Rodriguez is charged with aggravated assault on a peace officer and remains in custody without bond.

A warrant for aggravated assault on a peace officer has been issued for Henriquez. A warrant has also been by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement for illegal re-entry.

Officials said Henriquez may be affiliated with the Sureno 13 gang and should be considered armed and dangerous.

Investigators are working to identify the third suspect.

Anyone with information that would aid in this investigation is encouraged to contact Det. A. Mutchler at 281-261-3961.
