HOUSTON Former Houston Cougars quarterback Case Keenum is finally starting to take the strides that Gary Kubiak knew he could make.
So much so, that Keenum could push T.J. Yates to win the Texans back-up quarterback spot behind starter Matt Schaub.
He s making a big push. I think he s made the other two much better because of how far he s come, but preseason will be huge for him, Kubiak said on Tuesday. It ll be fun to see how far he s come once the lights come on.
Former Cowboys quarterback Stephen McGee is also in the mix at quarterback.
Keenum was brought in by Kubiak last year, but didn t see much playing time during the pre-season. He spent the rest of year on the practice squad. This time around, things are different and it has a lot to do with confidence.
Now, he s mastered another system and he wants to go compete. He does it every day, Kubiak said. Does a hell of a job. Every day, Case makes four or five instinctive plays you can t coach. He s making a lot of progress.
Even Schaub can tell that Keenum could make the jump in the depth chart and become his back-up.
I definitely can because you see what he has physically, how he can throw the football, how he reads defenses, and his command in the huddle, Schaub said on Thursday. He has all those attributes and I definitely see him being able to play at this level. No doubt about it.
Kubiak has said multiple times throughout training camp that he expects Keenum to get a lot of reps through the pre-season.
