HOUSTON The Houston Texans have announced that they have signed free agentLB Joe Mays.

In order to make room for him on the roster, the team declared rookie CB Johnny Adams waived/injured.

Mays spent the 2012 season with the Denver Broncos playing in 6 games and recorded 20 tackles and half a sack. He missed the last part of the season after breaking his leg in October.

Mays was cut last week by the Broncos.

He s very athletic and has played a lot of football, excellent in man coverage, said Kubiak. We have a need right now for some experience in this league to come in here.

The Chicago-native is entering his 5th NFL season spending the previous three years with the Broncos and his first year with the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Texans, more specifically, Matt Schaub, are very aware of the veteran s ability to play physical. Last year, Mays hit Schaub so hard during their Week 3 game that it took part of Schaub s ear off.

Mays was suspended for one game and fined $500,000 for the helmet-to-helmet hit.

We re way past that. That was gone as soon as we walked off the field that day. It s just a physical, hard-nosed game and he s a physical player, said Schaub about Mays. It s just part of football and I don t fault him for that. We re way past that, so he s a good player and a good guy. It s definitely water under the bridge.

The Texans line backing core is very banged up right now so bringing in Mays will definitely help with depth, especially at the middle linebacker spot.
