LAS VEGAS, NV Rockets forward Chandler Parsons has already made a mark with the fans here in Houston. Now, he s trying to the same for the folks of USA basketball.
This is a huge honor, Parsons told NBA TV on Tuesday. It s one of my biggest goals to become an Olympian and to be able to play for that gold medal. I think that s all of our dreams here.
Parsons is one of 28 players that have been invited to the USA basketball mini-camp in Las Vegas by Duke head coach Mike Krzyzewski. The players will work all week and take part in an intra-squad game at the end.
Rockets guard James Harden, who was part of the US team that won the gold medal at the London Olympics while he was with the Thunder, made sure to tell Parsons how important getting invited to a mini-camp really is.
He just told me how it s a huge honor, said Parsons. He said just to play my game, play unselfish and that s exactly what I ve been trying to do while I ve been out here.
Parsons told NBA TV that one of the unique things about the camp is getting to work with different NBA coaches, such as Chicago Bulls head coach Tom Thibodeau.
It s cool getting to see how different coach Thibs is from coach McHale, said Parsons. There are a lot of great mentors and coaches here and I m trying to take everything in that I can.
The 3rd year man out of Florida is in the middle of a very busy off-season. As most Rockets fans know, Parsons played a big part in the recruitment of center Dwight Howard and he s excited to have him in Houston.
I just wanted him to feel comfortable in whatever decision he made, said Parsons. I was basically in his ear telling how good we could be, telling him that we can win championships.
