HOUSTON A newborn at the Houston Zoo is getting some tender loving care from its mama and its keepers.

The baby sifaka is the son of mother Zenobia and father Gaius. He weighed only 3.4 ounces at birth.

Sifaka are very vulnerable when first born and require special care, so keepers are watching him closely.

The infant will cling to Zenobia s belly for about a month, and then ride on her back for a few more months before he starts becoming independent.

Full grown sifaka are known for their amazing ability to leap over 20 feet.

Sifaka are an endangered lemur from the island of Madagascar, where deforestation is getting worse every year.

You can meet the baby boy and his parents in the Wortham World of Primates at the Houston Zoo.
