HOUSTON Ashley Scott Rowell, 35, was the face of Duff Beer Distributors. Rowell shipped several brands of beer across Texas including the popular Southern Star Beer.

Great guy, he had a passion for craft beer and did a lot for the community, Josh Samples, who knew the Rowell, said.

But Friday night, his life ended at his front door step on Portsmouth Street --- near the Museum District. Police said he answered the door after the bell rang, and the gunman shot him dead.

This all happened during a sleepover party for his son. Rowell s wife and three children were all inside of the home including two of the neighbor s kids.

Unfortunately, yes, some of the children may have seen the victim on the ground, police Sgt. Brian Harris said.

Rowell s brother-in-law, who is a Houston police officer, was on duty patrolling at the time. He was notified and he immediately made his way over to his sister s house.

Rowell started the beer distribution company in Pasadena nearly six years ago. A sales manager said he sold the company a week before Christmas.

Detectives are trying to figure out if a lawsuit filed in 2010 against Rowell has anything with his death.

There were numerous family members that were involved in the business or the sale of the business and the various financial aspect of this family, Harris said.

Now Rowell s three children, ages 8, 3 and 1, will be forced to live life without their dad.

The news has been devastating for Neartown Church where Rowell was an active member.

He was just such a great friend and Ash was a very gracious man, and a very loving guy, and it was just an honor to be his friend. said Jack McAdoo.
