HOUSTON Police on Wednesday released new video of a corner store robbery suspect s daring escape after he was locked inside the west Houston business.

According to the Houston Police Department, the robbery occurred at the New Tony's Express in the 4000 block of Synott around 11 p.m. on Nov. 12.

Owner Mike Vora said the man walked in and out of the store a few times claiming that he didn't have enough money for a bag of chips. On his third trip inside the store, Vora said the man pulled out a shiny silver pistol and pointed it at him.

He had his gun on my face and just jumped on the counter, recalled Vora. He came inside and I gave him money.

Vora has a gun behind the counter too, but said he decided not to use it because it was the eve of a religious Hindu holiday, known as the Festival of Lights, and it wasn't that much money either.

He took only $200 or something like that, said Vora. So, I thought I don't want to kill someone just for that.

Instead, Vora waited for the man to jump back over the counter. He locked himself inside the case, hit the panic button and locked the front door with a special switch.

The suspect was trapped inside the store and started panicking.

He left his shoes and everything here, said Vora. He was just running around because he had no way out.

The man ended up climbing up the hot water heater and into the Bayou Kitchen restaurant next door.

I think the guy locked the door trying to wait for the police to come, said Kim Taylor who works at the restaurant. He wanted a way out so he found him a way out.

The suspect ended up breaking open a side door and escaped. He is described only as a male in his 20s.

Anyone with information on the identity of the wanted suspect is urged to contact the HPD Robbery Division at 713-308-0700 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
