HOUSTON -- The family of a Walmart shoplifting suspect who was shot and killed by a deputy is speaking out.

Shelly Frey s family wants to know why a 26-year veteran of the Harris County Sheriff s Office opened fire on a car filled with women and children.

All I need is some answers to what has taken place, said Cheryl Wilkerson, Frey s mother.

The Harris County Sheriff's Office says Deputy Louis Campbell was trying to detain several shoplifting suspects outside a Walmart in north Harris County when they assaulted him and tried to drive off in a car Thursday night. The deputy said he was being dragged by the car. He fired his weapon and hit Frey who was sitting in the passenger seat.

Her family says she never was in the Walmart and was just getting a ride home.

To the officer that shot my daughter: Why did you have to shoot her twice? Sitting in a vehicle on the passenger side? said Frey s father.

The 26-year veteran deputy was placed on administrative leave while the case is being investigated.

Frey leaves behind two daughters: 7-year-old Chassidy and 2-year-old Cherish. They will now be raised by their grandparents.

Friends and family members are gathering at the apartment complex where the young woman died Wednesday evening to hold a candlelight vigil for her.

The two other women have been charged with robbery.
