HOUSTON The woman accused of whipping her son to death with a cord is now suicidal, according to her attorney.

Vastie Coleman, 27, was scheduled to appear in court on Tuesday morning for an emergency custody hearing to determine if her other two children, ages 6 and 8, would be placed in the care of relatives. They are currently staying with a foster family.

Coleman s attorney Jules Laird said she was too distraught to appear before the judge and that she is contemplating suicide.

Her state of mind is very bad at this point. Obviously, if you lose a 4-year-old child, regardless of how it s done, that s part of why she is so distraught, said Laird.

Investigators say she beat her 4-year-old son Kyron Barnes with a cord Sunday night at their home in the Villas of Pine Lake Apartments off Sam Houston Parkway.

Emergency crews arrived to revive him, but he was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

The boy also had evidence of old injuries, according to the CPS.

Coleman is being held in the Harris County Jail without bond. Her court date has been reset to August 22.
