GALVESTON, Texas People in Galveston are aware that there s a tropical storm in the Gulf, but they were carrying on as usual on the beach on Saturday just as the formation of Debby was declared by the National Hurricane Center.

Along the Seawall, it was a picture perfect day. The waves were a little higher than usual and there were more people on the beach.

Despite there being no immediate threat, the memories of Hurricane Ike remain fresh. Portions of it have only barely recovered since the storm caused billions of dollars in damage four years ago.

The emergency operation center in Galveston was not open on Saturday, and officials say they are simply monitoring the situation.

As far as boarding up windows and stocking up on supplies, that isn t happening yet. It s too early to tell which way the system could head.

Danny Hart owns Little Daddy s Gumbo Bar on the Strand. He is still waiting to see what happens.

We have a maintenance guy on staff that s waiting to go in a moment s notice if we have to board up or put sandbags out, Hart said. But we don t think that s going to happen.
