SPRING, Texas Harris County Sheriff s deputies are trying to determine what led a 25-year-old man to allegedly stab his two younger cousinsto death, then kill himself at a home in Spring Sunday evening.

Deputies said Joseph Winchester stabbed two young brothers, 10-year-old Hunter Archer and 8-year-old JhadenArcher, in the 6200 block of Darby Way around 5:40 p.m.

According to the victim s adoptive father, Christian Archer, he and Winchester went to a shooting range around 3 p.m. When they got back a couple hours later, Winchester brought the shotgun they were using inside the house.

He then approached the boys, who were playing video games on the first floor, and stabbed them.

Deputies said Winchester, the adoptive mom s cousin, then ran outside and shot himself in the family s driveway, where he died.

Hunterwas pronounced dead at the scene. Jhaden was airlifted to Memorial Hermann, but did not survive.

Christian Archer said the boys were adopted two years ago and had come from an abusive family.

Authoritiessaid another child was home at the time of the attack, but was not hurt.

For all we know, the little red-headed boy was upstairs and heard popping and he came down the steps, said Deanna Bowlds, neighbor. And I don t know what he saw, but he went and flagged down one of the Boy Scout dads and asked him to call 911 for him.

The motive for the stabbingwas still being investigated.

Both Hunter and Jhaden attended Northampton Elementary. Hunter was in the fifth grade, and Jhaden was in third.
