HOUSTON A man who stabbed another man to death was shot and killed by police attempting to break up a fight near a northwest Houston night club early Monday, according to Houston police.
Police said two officers were working traffic duty near the El Chapparal night club, located on 18th street at the North Loop, around 2:15 a.m. when a group of men began fighting at a nearby Shell gas station.
The officers ran over to break up the fight, pulled one man off another and took him to the side.
That man went to his vehicle, pulled out a knife, then went back and began stabbing the man he had been fighting with, according to police.
Police said officers began shouting verbal commands to drop the knife, which the suspect ignored, and continued to repeatedly stab the victim.
Fearing for the safety of the victim and others in the area, one of the officers discharged his duty weapon several times, hitting the suspect, according to police.
The suspect got up, jumped into his vehicle and drove off.
The suspect then ran into a couple of parked cars in the lot before crashing into some bushes.
He died at the scene.
The stabbing victim was taken to Northwest Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he later died.
Police were questioning several witnesses to see how the fight began, but said some of the other men involved in the first brawl fled the scene.
The officer who discharged his weapon is stationed at the Northeast Patrol Division.
