HOUSTON Tuesday s winter storm dealt a cold blow to a northeast Houston woman known to everyone as Ms. Precious.
The storm caused a 100-year-old oak to crash onto her roof. That s when perfect strangers saw her story on KHOU 11 News and came forward in droves to offer a helping hand.
Ponce Tree Services offered to remove the tree for free.
It s tricky, but the guys know what they re doing, said Reynaldo Ponce of Ponce Services. They have a lot of experience, and that s what matters, experience.
Normally the job would cost about $2,000. It might as well have been $2 million for Ms. Precious. She suffers from a number of health issues. Her house has been falling down around her since Hurricane Ike.
We try to donate. Sometimes we can t donate, said Ponce. It s not just her. We try to help when we can.
Dozens of KHOU 11 News viewers emailed with offers of assistance.
The Lord is my helper, Ms. Precious said. I mean I don t know what else to say. I m just overwhelmed with joy.
In a couple hours, the tree was out of the roof. With the dangerous tree removed, the roof can now be repaired. Contractors have offered their services.
Ms. Precious offers this advice to anybody who s feeling hopeless about their situation.
You fall down, you get back up, she said. That s what I tell my grandbabies. I don t care how hard life gets, you just keep pushing. Keep pushing forward. You ll make it. You ll make it.
