(KMOV.com) Nine federal inmates and four guards were being treated at area hospitals after a prison transport bus overturned into a ditch on Interstate 64 early Sunday morning.

Illinois State Police confirm that a bus transporting nine federal prison inmates was traveling on the Interstate around 5 a.m. when it lost control and overturned in a ditch near Illinois Rte. 158.

The inmates were initially transferred to Illinois hospitals with unknown injuries. Police say extra precautions were taken while transporting prisoners to the hospital.

The hospitalized inmates were under police guard.

A few hours after the incident, five of the inmates were transfered to St. Louis hospitals. The other four inmates were taken to the St. Clair County Jail on Belleville.One guard traveling on the bus was being treated for serious injuries.

Police have not said if weather and refreezing roads were factors in the accident. The interstate was shut down for over an hour in both directions as rescue workers freed the passengers from the bus.

The transport bus was enroute to Jefferson City, Mo. from Kentucky.
