AUSTIN-- Education took center stage at the interactive portion of South by Southwest Saturday.

University ofTexas at AustinPresident Bill Powers spoke Saturday afternoon at the downtown Omni Hotel. He addressed the overlap of teaching and innovation. He argued large research institutions provide the building blocks for our economic future.

Powers said he is overseeing new educational technology and advances in science at UT. And he's taking a few lessons from venture capitalists.

Markets, ownership, rewards, contracts. We can learn a lot from that not only to help the high tech innovation going on in our campus but even the educational innovation going on in our campus as well, said Powers.

For the second year at SXSW, former Vice President Al Gore also spoke to a large crowd today. He talked about his latest book called, The Future.

Gore said there are six drivers of global change, which relate to technology and the physical world.
