PEARLAND -- A Pearland police officer is doing fine after being dragged by a car on Wednesday.

Officer Jeffrey Bond was dragged for about 10 seconds. Brittani Thomas was behind the wheel.

I was in the driver seat, said Thomas. I don't know what was going on.

The 28-year-old then fled the scene, leading police on a high speed chase for about ten minutes. In the end, Thomas ended up crashing her car.

Because of the two wrecks, she disabled her vehicle and ended up having to stop, said Lt. Onesimo Lopez, Pearland Police Department.

Thomas then casually walked out of the car. An officer pulled out his duty weapon. Seconds later, she was in handcuffs and appearing disheveled.

Even more surprising, inside the car were Thomas two nieces -- ages 3 and 8. Police say during the entire chase they were not wearing safety belts.

So what started it all?

Police say Thomas' sister was attempting to shoplift clothes from the Macy's on Broadway in Pearland. Thomas was waiting in the car while her sister was in the store.

When police began to question Thomas, she took off, dragging Officer Bond with her.

I m bipolar, schizophrenic, said Thomas. I had no idea what was going on.

Police say Thomas also had a warrant out for her arrest.

The warrant was for theft by check, according to police.

Thomas says she has had some bad luck in the last few years and is trying to get her life in order.

I ve been depressed ever since; I can't get my life together. I can't get my composure together, she said.

Thomas has been charged with charged with Assault on a Public Servant, a third degree felony; two counts of Endangering a Child, each state jail felonies; Evading in a Vehicle, a state jail felony; and Failure to Identify - Fugitive from Justice, a Class A misdemeanor.

The children were not hurt in the incident and were released to their grandfather.

Thomas was released after posting bond of $53,500.

Officer Bond is doing fine.
