Drunk driver charged in wrong-way, chain-reaction crash involving cop on North Freeway
A wrong-way driver—who was also drunk—caused a chain-reaction crash involving a police squad car and three other vehicles early Friday, according to Houston police.
Police said Martin Hernandez, 33, was driving a brown Chevy Silverado northbound in the southbound lanes on the North Freeway at Tidwell around midnight.Police received several calls about the driver and an officer was on the way to check it out. That officer was cresting over the hill when he almost ran head-on into Hernandez.
The officer swerved to avoid Hernandez s pickup, then slammed into a retaining wall.
A car traveling next to the officer stopped and was struck from behind by another vehicle. Two more vehicles then slammed into them.
No one was seriously injured, but the officer was taken by his patrol supervisor to Memorial Hermann to be checked out as a precaution.
Hernandez kept going, but more patrol officers caught up with him after he exited the freeway. He was then arrested for DWI.
Police said this was not the first time Hernandez has been accused of drunk driving.
His bond had not been set as of 1 p.m. Friday.
