WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. Millionaire polo mogul John Goodman was sentenced Friday to 16 years in prison for DUI manslaughter.

Goodman was convicted in April in a 2010 fatal crash that killed 23-year-old Scott Wilson.

Prosecutors said Goodman, a River Oaks native, was drunk when he crashed his $250,000 Bentley into Wilson s Hyundai in West Palm Beach. The Hyundai was pushed into a canal, and Wilson drowned.

Goodman walked away from the crash, saying he saw no sign of the young man s car.

The judge also sentenced Goodman to a $10,000 fine, and his driver s license was permanently revoked.

According to WPEC-TV, just before Goodman s criminal trial began, he settled a civil suit with Wilson s family for $46 million. Prior to that settlement, Goodman adopted his adult girlfriend, Heather Hutchins ostensibly to protect a large trust fund from the family s lawsuit. In the end, though, he settled anyway.

Goodman s attorney has said he will appeal.

It is our belief that multiple errors were committed during and before the trial that, in effect, denied our client s ability to get a fair trial, said Roy Black, Goodman s attorney. We intend to file an appeal so that our client can receive the just and fair proceeding to which he is entitled by law.

WPEC-TV contributed to this report.
