HOUSTON The defense abruptly rested in the political corruption trial of Harris County Commissioner Jerry Eversole Wednesday, presenting no evidence and calling no witnesses.
Federal prosecutors have spent days arguing that Eversole took hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of gifts and bribes from a county contractor.
But Eversole s lawyer claims the gifts were nothing more than the product of a long friendship.
The trial will move to final arguments on Friday.
The longtime commissioner could face prison time in convicted.
