PEARLAND, Texas The Pearland Oilers have been a pleasant surprise this season with their run in the Class 5A UIL State Championship football playoffs.
The team is set to play the Allen Eagles Saturday for the Division I title at AT&T Stadium in Arlington.
In the middle of all the chaos the team s sendoff on Friday, one mother was hoping to see her son one last time before the big game.
I am most excited for my son who is a senior. He missed it on the last go around when we went to state in 2010, Donna Phillips, the mother of Justin Phillips, said.
While Phillips anxiously waited outside, her son was busy inside firing up the team, which not many people thought would make it to the playoffs.
Well, you know we finally got people back on our side. At the beginning of the year, in the ups and downs, they weren t totally with us and some people were against us. But it feels good to have the community back with us, Justin Phillips said.
While the big game is still a day way, it s clear the Oilers already won the hearts of this community.
My sister-in-law and I, we are known as the cowbell ladies and we bring them to every game. We love it and we cheer and we really want to support the oilers, Elizabeth Garcia Locke, an Oilers fan, said.
The Oilers' quest for another championship even has turned the schools geography teacher into a cheerleader.
Because our boys are going to state, and they are going to bring it home, Patti Ney said.
I just know that we have one of the best fan bases in Texas, and they are all going to come out and support us in Dallas and help us to victory, Ty Duggan, another player with Oilers, said.
Many of the people said they couldn t wait to be here for the big sendoff. They re hoping to come back and welcome the Oiler s home as champs.
