HOUSTON Houston Texans head coach Gary Kubiak wasn t mincing words on Thursday morning when it came to his rookie third round pick Sam Montgomery.

He s way behind the team. Way behind. He s behind conditioning wise and, now, he s got an ankle that he can do nothing about, Kubiak said after practice. It s not his fault, but he s way behind.

The outside linebacker out of LSU has missed all the teams Training Camp work-outs because of an ankle injury. At multiple practices, Montgomery was seen wearing a walking boot.

Montgomery also reported to camp out of shape.

The same troubles go for the other 3rd round pick, Trevardo Williams. The former UConn outside linebacker has also battled injuries and Kubiak isn t sure how much he ll be able to contribute to the team during the pre-season.

Don t get me wrong now, there s nothing they can do about it. When you re injured, you can t go if you can t go, Kubiak said. But it s just tough because it s been a long offseason and we re counting on those guys to push players on this team and be in position to help us.

Right now, it s just not happening right now. Hopefully, we can get them going and hopefully we can get them out here as soon as possible.

Both Williams and Montgomery are making the transition to outside linebacker after playing defensive end in college. Other rookies have impressed at that position such as undrafted free agent Willie Jefferson out of Stephen F. Austin.
