HOUSTON -- The next time you lose your car keys, you may not be turning over couch cushions. Instead, just turn on your smartphone.
Tile uses a small Bluetooth signal and an app on your smartphone to point you to your lost objects. Its makers, who are raising money on Kickstarter.com, released a demo video showing how it works.
Tile's little plastic tiles can be attached to your car keys, your purse, or even your bike. The tiles then send out a Bluetooth signal that your smartphone can pick up on. For instance, if you lose your car keys (and you attached a Tile to them), the Tile app will direct you where to walk in your home so you can find them again.
What if you re too far from your lost Tile to pick up on its signal? Other Tile users phones will pick up on it and will, without them knowing, notify you of the last known location. Pretty slick but only effective if enough people use Tile.
Each tile costs about $25, but the more you buy the cheaper they get. There s even a pre-sale special right now on the company s Kickstarter page. The good news is there s no monthly service charge of any kind, but you ll have to get a new Tile every year and recycle the old one.
