HOUSTON He s prominent and respectable by profession, but what a River Oaks area businessman is accused of puts his personal reputation into question. Roger Matice is charged with possessing and promoting child pornography.
At age 70, this is the first time he's ever been in trouble with the law.
Matice owns Urban Designer Kitchens and Baths on Timmons. The business s website says he s done nearly 200 major projects locally and internationally.
Investigators said work wasn t all he was doing at the office.
An officer reportedly made contact with Matice during an undercover online sting.
Investigators said Matice offered to upload pornographic images of children while he was at work.According to authorities, he also offered to upload more of the disturbing images from his home computer.
That s when investigators obtained a search warrant and closed in on Matice.
This is not something that should be left alone, said Assistant District Attorney John Wakefield with Harris County s Child Exploitation Section.
Wakefield said stings such as the one that reeled in Matice are telling of the workload his section is dealing with.
There is no profile for someone who possesses child pornography. It could be anybody, explained Wakefield.
The 70-year-old s neighbors at the River Oaks Townhomes are finding out about the charges.
It s disgusting, said neighbor Paula Herrin. There s so many of them in this world. That petrifies me. I m glad my child is only 20, and I don t have to worry about that.
The Harris County Sheriff s Office, Houston police and the FBI have teamed up in recent years to go after suspected online predators. The Houston Metro Internet Crimes Against Child Task Force is cracking down daily on the trafficking of child porn online.
Harris County s Exploitation Section has over 200 pending cases.
