HOUSTON The entire El Real restaurant in Montrose was shut down Thursday night for a unique fundraiser where police dogs were allowed to attend.

A local nonprofit organization started by women called K9 s 4 Cops held a party to raise money for law enforcement agencies across the nation to help purchase K9s. There is a severe shortage of these trained dogs.

Because city budgets have significantly reduced, buying a $10,000 to $15,000 K9 for many police departments is out of the question, all while the demand for these amazing dogs are on the rise.

I just think, right there, tells you how big the need is. We are getting calls from Honolulu to Maine and actually last week I got a call from Afghanistan from a soldier out in the field who works with K9s who is coming back home, said Liz Lara Carreno, the executive director of K9 s 4 Cops.

Carreno told us the soldier wants to start a K9 Unit in Kansas City, Missouri when he gets back to the United States.
